The Strongest Name in Pools

Water Chemistry

Chemistry was never my favorite subject in school but getting help with your pool water treatment is well within reach. Most pool stores that sell chemicals can analyze your pool water with computer technology. This service is usually done free of charge as long as you follow their guidelines purchase their suggested additives. Testing the water at home is also very easy using “dip-strips”. These strips will change color after a quick dip in your pool, to let you know the chemical levels in the pool. Over time, you will get familiar with your water and regular chemical maintenance and needs will become recognizable.

Ideal levels for a residential pool:

  • Chlorine 1.0 – 3.0 ppm
  • Stabilizer 40 ppm
  • pH 7.4 – 7.6
  • Total Alkalinity 125 – 150 ppm
  • Calcium hardness (vinyl) 175 – 225 ppm
